Monster Block Party Artist Profile: Blue Sky Black Death
Based out of Seattle, Monster Block Party duo Blue Sky Black Death have been making alluring productions for quite some time now. Though separately, members Kingston and Young God had respected careers as producers, after signing with Mush Records in 2005 the two originally joined forces to create an instrumental album.
Young God remembers the early days of the outfit, “We weren’t really working as a unit until a year, maybe two years before that album. Kingston was doing some production for some people, but I was mostly working by myself. The Mush thing was originally going to be just an instrumental album with a few vocal tracks. Then we decided that the vocal tracks wouldn’t have gone that well with the instrumental tracks, so it was, like, why don’t we just do a double album, because that’s bold and no one really does that [on their first album]. The guy from Mush was cool with it, so we just decided to do that.” Their debut, A Heap of Broken Images, was released in 2006 to an overwhelming amount of support. During the making of the album, the two decided to change their original moniker of Torso to their current name, which is a skydiving phrase alluding to beauty and death.
Seven years after A Heap of Broken Images, BSBD have released a seriously extensive amount of work. A quick read of their discography will find six hip-hop albums with rappers Nacho Picasso, Hell Razah, Jean Grae, and Holocaust, two instrumental albums, two electronic albums in Third Party and Slow Burning Lights and three mixtapes – we haven’t even mentioned their latest offering.
Having just been released on Fake Four on October 1st, Young God and Kingston are still celebrating the release of their the five-track instrumental album Glaciers. A cumulation of a decade’s worth of hip hop and instrumentalism, the album is rich in its ambient, shoegaze and subdued rock influences. With most of the tracks going past the 10-minute mark, Glaciers allows the listener to create their own imagery and get lost within the music. We hope the duo shares some of their latest efforts when they take the stage at the 12th St Pavilion for the annual Monster Block Party in Nashville this Saturday, October 26th. Something Wicked Artist Profile: Cosmic Gate
If you were going to make a list of the greatest trance acts of all time, Something Wicked duo Cosmic Gate would definitely be near the top. Having remained one of the biggest names in the genre for almost 15 years, the boy’s have never been one’s to rest on their past resumés. As artists, they’ve continued to push the envelope and still wow fans after every show and festival they play at.
Both hailing from Krefeld, Germany, Nic Chagall and Bossi formed the Cosmic Gate outfit in 1999. A year later, the two took the trance world by storm with their mega hits and classic anthems “Exploration of Space” and “Firewire” which graced charts around the globe. The two lament, “Actually, we both been in the scene already before Cosmic Gate for some years already. But with the start of Cosmic Gate, things seemed to be kind of exploding for us. We had first big success in Germany and latest with the Top 10 we reached in the UK with ‘Firewire,’ most other parts of the globe followed.” The super-producers have remained at the forefront of innovative production with six widely-received albums that have included fan favorites like “Body of Conflict,” “Not Enough Time,” “F.A.V.” and “Analog Feel” all of which further showcase Cosmic Gate’s musical prowess.
Cosmic Gate continued to amaze listeners in 2011 when they released their seventh artist album Wake Your Mind. The long player was a colossal success, with tracks like “Be Your Sound” receiving an IDMA nomination for Best Trance Track in 2012. When asked why they named their album Wake Your Mind, Cosmic Gate responded, “We think the album brings together quite different styles of electronic music, and sometimes people get stuck in their own scene, not accepting or listening to music out of this genre. We tried to break these boundaries with the album a bit, create an album for EDM fans in general–even if they like trance, progressive, or even house.”
Cosmic Gate bring that same philosophy with them into every set they play. You never know quite what to expect when these icons take over the decks. What you are guaranteed, is a set filled with energy and emotion by two of the best. Expect a musical journey that will wake your mind to new sounds and new experiences when Cosmic Gate takes the stage for Something Wicked in Houston, TX on Saturday, October 26th! Tickets are still available, so grab them now!
